DIY Faux Rusted Zinc Pots - learn how to make rust on these beautiful zinc pots using a secret ingredient you already have around! Hint: it's a super fragrant and tasty ingredient, one that is mostly used in fall and winter recipes!
Hello, friends! It's time for another DIY project, are you ready to get creative? :) Today I'm sharing some DIY Faux Rusted Zinc Pots! I will be showing you how to create some rust using one secret ingredient that will help you turn ordinary zinc pots into gorgeously chic and vintage decorative pieces.
It's an ingredient I'm guessing you already use in your cooking, especially now that fall is starting to claim its rights, so chances are you already have it on hand! Think perfectly spiced apple sauces or pumpkin lattes, pies, crumbles, curries - all these could benefit from the amazing taste and fragrance of our special ingredient!
OK, if you've been following my blog for a while, I have a feeling you are already guessing what the secret ingredient is! :) Yes, it's the same one used on my DIY Faux Rusted French Labels, another chic project I shared a few years back. Then I used it to create rust on paper and now I thought about giving it a try on zinc pots. I mean, why not, right? :)
I wasn't even sure it would work, but I was surprised to see that it did! The truth is I was really hoping it would! :)
So, have you guessed what the secret ingredient is just yet? :) OK, here it is ... it's cinnamon! :) Good old amazingly fragrant cinnamon, that can turn any dish into a perfectly spiced delight!
You can use regular cinnamon or you can use your favorite pumpkin pie spice mix or your apple pie spice mix, anything that has a lot of cinnamon in it. :) I used my all time favorite pumpkin pie spice mix, a homemade version that I will be sharing on my foodie blog soon.
I would say that half of the whole vintage and chic charm of these DIY Faux Rusted Zinc Pots is given by the beautiful French rusty label, so I would definitely use those too - DIY Faux Rusted French Labels. But of course, if you are not into French decorating you can just add the labels that you want. You could also keep the pots without any labels, if that sounds more appealing to you, the choice is all yours!
I'm sharing the whole step by step tutorial with tons of images and instructions on The Graphics Fairy, as part of our collaboration, you can find the link to the article on the end of this post. You will see that I had to improvise at one point and even use some colors.
And speaking of colors, I have recently discovered the craft supplies from Mont Marte and I really love them. I have this Acrylic paint set (24 colors) and so far I'm pretty happy with them! They are quite affordable, while having a good quality, which is a big plus. This set is perfect for all kind of colorful and creative experiments! It also gives you the chance to learn the name of the colors - Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and a little bit of Cadmium red were my choices for this project.
Maybe I'll do a craft supply haul with some of the things I bought from Mont Marte, would you be interested in these types of blog post?
The best part about this project is that you can actually choose how much faux rust to add, depending on your preferences! How amazing is that?! :)
The beautiful zinc pots that I chose to decorate are from Esschert Design (Netherlands) and can be found on Amazon. They have other beautiful decorative items for your home decor, you can find them all here >>> Esschert Design. Of course you can choose to decorate any other zinc pots that you have!
