Vintage French Recycled Containers – learn how to easily recycle old containers and give them a new chic life using acrylic paint in two contrasting colors and wax for the distressing and aging part, and waterslide decal paper for the French ephemera image transfer part
Hello, creative friends! Ready for another super chic DIY project? :) I hope you are, because today I will be sharing how to make some très chic Vintage French Recycled Containers! The best part about this project is the recycling part, in my opinion. All those small or large plastic or paper containers, tin or plastic boxes that you’ve been hoarding saving for a while will be finally put to good use! :)
Giving a new life to different objects you already have around can be a great way to offer your home a small makeover, without having to spend too much money. That’s another great thing about this project – it’s quite inexpensive! That’s a huge plus for me and I’m guessing it is for you too, especially in these troubled time. Now more than ever, it seems like our priorities have shifted and we don’t have the heart to spend too much money on new home decor items while transitioning to a new season.
But a little bit of recycling? That we can do! :)
Loving our homes it’s really important and these small chic details – strategically placed here and there – can really give us a good vibe. And when you think about it, you’ll get all those good, positive vibes twice – when you make the project and when you are actually using these beauties in your home! They will always bring a smile to your face, so I would say it’s definitely a win-win situation! :)
Chances are you already have the supplies on hand, so you can just start right now! Just go for it! :)
And if you don’t have all the supplies on hand, please, pleeease don’t let that stop you! Adapt, improvise and work with what you have! I love doing that on my project (and in life in general –wink) and I really encourage you to do that too! Rules are meant to be broken, right? :)
For this project I used again my fool proof technique of painting and distressing using two contrasting colors and wax! This method always works for me and what makes it even more perfect is the fact that it can be used on different types of surfaces. I’m always amazed about what a little bit of acrylic paint can do!
You will see how some regular containers or boxes will practically metamorphose right before your eyes … and turning into beautiful butterflies! Well, not really, but you know what I mean! ;) These Vintage French Recycled Containers are gorgeous and can be easily integrated into any home! You can go with white, like I did, or you can choose other neutral colors, maybe even some pretty pastels. I’m voting mostly for white or any other neutral colors because I find them easier to adapt to any color palette you already have in your home.

I’m sharing a before photo, just to give you an idea on what you can actually use, you can see I have there a Tulsi tea box (one of my favorite tea), a hibiscus tea box (also one of my favorites), a curry box, a coffee box and a brown sugar box. I went with containers that had a lid because I wanted to be able to also store different things inside afterwards, but really, just go with what you have around.
So I mentioned this project is quite amazing because it uses recycled materials and it’s inexpensive, but it’s also so easy to make! And after having fun with painting and distressing the containers, here comes the last piece of the puzzle, la pièce de résistance that will truly take things to a whole new level – the French ephemera labels, obviously! :) I also created a free printable with the images that I used here, so you can easily try this project, you will find it over at The Graphics Fairy, I will share the link at the end of the post.
For the image transfer I went with my one true love – the waterslide decal paper! :) I know not everyone has this type of paper available, so you can choose your preferred image transfer method instead. Or just go with the easiest method of actually gluing the labels directly on the containers, like I did here with my DIY French Recycled Tin Cans.
decal paper | laserjet printer | acrylic paint | candle wax | sandpaper | brushes | scissors (afflinks)
And if you have some glass containers that might be needing a little bit of TLC, you can totally try this project on those too! Just like I did here with my DIY French Aged Pitchers.

Styling these gorgeous Vintage French recycled Containers won’t be a problem, because they really go with everything! So whether if you are a cottage, a farmhouse, a vintage or a Shabby Chic style enthusiast, you’ll be able to find the perfect place for these beauties in your home.
I love using dyed fabric (remember my how to naturally dye fabric project), wood boards and seasonal flowers from our garden! Or small branches, leaves and other organic elements, you can never go wrong with these, no matter the season!
And speaking of flowers, your new and beautiful Vintage French Recycled Containers (the metal or plastic ones) can be easily used as gorgeous vases…when in need! :)
Hope you will love this project and decide to give it a try, I’m sharing the full tutorial with all the steps and tons of images on The Graphics Fairy, as part of our collaboration.
