If you love vintage things, this project is definitely for you, because it has that right amount of rustiness that will make your heart sing :)
I designed some vintage looking labels for this project – all French, of course … I even added two ‘nail’ holes on the sides of each labels, to make them look more authentic and rusty.
As always, I used the French graphics from The Graphics Fairy, these graphics have a way of always inspiring me in creating something new… well, old in this case :)
I mentioned the 3 key ingredients earlier, they are:
1. Coffee
2. Cinnamon
3. Sugar
Each and every one of these ingredients has a different property that will help us achieve what we want. One will add patina and will create wrinkles to the paper, one will literally become our ‘rust’ and one will help us to position and better control the rust.
This was a fun project to make, because I didn’t have any expectation when I started it. That really helped me clear my mind and just enjoy the whole process.
I have used coffee to distress paper before while making my DIY Coffee Stained Vintage Books or my DIY French Script Paper Feathers, but I’ve never used those other two ingredients that sort of tied everything together and completed the whole look.
Things got messy at one point, but sometimes beautiful things are created that way :)
Finding ways of using the labels won’t be hard, there are so many possibilities when it comes to decorating with these beauties.
I found online some super chic zinc pots that worked perfect with my new DIY Faux Rusted French Labels. The old zinc finish pots are from Esschert Design (Netherlands) and come in various sizes and shapes.
I’m sharing them with you because I just love them and I think they would look great in any house, no matter the style you are choosing for your home decor.
You can use the zinc pots as they are.
Or decorate them to match your home decor style or color scheme and come up with unique ways of using them. I kind of prefer this second option – decorating the pots furthermore..
But I guess that once you discover the powers of DIY projects, that need of decorating sort of just happens at one point :)
You can also decorate jars and bottles or any other items that you think might need a little bit of makeover.
I really love how my DIY Faux Rusted French Labels turned out, I hope you will give them a try!
NOTE: The little coffee cup is from Cosy & Trendy (a brand from Belgium that I love) and I found it online in my country. It’s from a collection called ‘New England – Patine’ and has an amazing ivory color. You can find more details on their website Cosy & Trendy, but chances are they are already available in your country on some website that sell home decor items.
