DIY Coffee Stained Vintage Books  – learn how to easily transform new books into old looking beautiful decorative pieces … using one special ingredient: COFFEE!

Hello, friends! The project I have for you today is one of those projects you will instantly fall in love with! It’s easy to make and I bet you already have all the ‘ingredients’ on hand. I mean all the 3 ingredients … coffee, books and a brush! :)

You might have already spotted some of these books in some of my older posts, I’ve been using them for quite some time now for creating lovely vignettes for our home. DIY Coffee Stained Vintage Books  #DIY #shabbychic #vintage #farmhouse #cottage

They make some stunning decorative pieces on their own, but you can easily pair them with other objects that you usually use for your home decor.

Another great thing about these DIY Coffee Stained Vintage Books? They are highly adaptable and can be easily integrated into your home decor, whether you are going for a cottage, farmhouse, Shabby chic or Vintage style.

You can keep things simple and just add some raffia ribbon. I just love the natural and almost organic feel raffia ribbon adds to these beauties! You could also use some jute twine if you are going for a more rustic look.

At this stage you will have some simple (but beautiful), neutral DIY Coffee Stained Vintage Books.

If you are envisioning these with a little bit of color, you could add some of my DIY Botanical Labels. This vintage Shabby rose is so delicate and completely transforms the simple books into a ‘statement’ piece for your home decor.

What I love most about these  DIY Coffee Stained Vintage Books? How truly unique each piece is!

You will see how coffee imprints some amazing patterns with different tones and shades. It will even create interesting textures, giving the books an old looking, natural appearance.

And speaking of textures, coffee will help you create all those charming wrinkles and bends that you can usually find in old books.

How to make DIY Coffee Stained Vintage Books

Supplies:

  • books (I used 3 books)
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup strong coffee
  • a brush

I used hardcover books for this project, but I think any books that will hold together after ripping their covers off will work just fine.

I didn’t feel bad about ‘destroying’ these books, because I had them in double exemplar. And I will be using them more than I did before the transformation, when they were just laying on some random shelves in our living room :)

So … the procedure is pretty simple. Gently rip the covers and try to keep the interior of the books intact!

You will have no problem with some of the covers and you will be able to remove them in one piece. But others will put up a good fight and you will have to remove them … in several pieces :)

Use your ripped covers to protect the surface – or use a plate or a tray for this. Coffee will stain almost any surface,  make sure you are not skipping this step!

Start brushing the coffee on the first page of the books and on ALL of the edges.

When brushing the coffee on the books, you will have two options:

  1. completely cover the surface with coffee
  2. apply coffee here and there

The paper will completely absorb the coffee after painting / staining and will create some interesting shades, patterns and textures when dried. You can work in layers and after the first brushing has dried, you can add more and more coffee. I even poured coffee in some of the areas to create natural drippings and splashes. Let the books dry between ‘layering’ and only stop WHEN and IF you are happy with the results! :) The coffee will fade after drying so add more until fully satisfied! :)

The more coffee you add, the more texture and wrinkles you will create, so just improvise and see where your creativity takes you!

The grade of aging and distressing depends entirely of you! Try imagining your books as a blank canvas and play with coffee until you are satisfied with the results! You will be creating your own abstract ‘coffee paintings’ if you wish :)

For demonstrating purposes, below you can see a little ‘before (on the left of the books) and after (on the right of the books)’.

Just let the books dry completely before using them and find unique ways of integrating them into your home!
