How to make magnesium oil – learn how to easily make magnesium oil at home using only two ingredients! Free printable labels included!
Hello, friends! These are some tough times we are living right now and I wanted to share this magnesium oil recipe with you because magnesium deficiency can really add up to all the stressful factors we have to deal with in our everyday lives on a regular basis, but especially now. I remember reading that over 70% of the world’s population has some form of magnesium deficiency, so chances are you are one of them! I know I was! How crazy is that, considering that magnesium is a ‘master’ mineral and plays such an important role in the proper functioning of our bodies? It’s really important for our health because it regulates calcium, potassium and salt levels, it’s vital to our cells’ proper functioning and is connected to over 300 biochemical processes in our bodies.
What is magnesium oil made of?
I first learned about magnesium deficiencies a couple of years ago and when I saw how easy it was to actually make magnesium oil at home, I knew I need it in my life! :) It seemed like the perfect solution to quickly increase magnesium levels and you only need two ingredients to make it – water and magnesium flakes (aka magnesium chloride)! I know you might be thinking right now – how come you use water to create an oil, right? I’m sure there is a perfect chemical explanation out there somewhere, but this concoction is basically a highly concentrated solution of magnesium chloride and water that has an oily feel when topically applied on the skin.
I’m not going into much scientific details here because I was really bad at chemistry (haha, now I wish I have paid more attention!) but I have to tell you that magnesium flakes (magnesium chloride) are not the same thing as Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). They both contain a high level of magnesium but as it turns out, magnesium flakes (magnesium chloride) are more easily absorbed by our bodies.
So remember this – in order to make Magnesium Oil you’ll need magnesium flakes (magnesium chloride)!
Useful tips: Did you know that food grade magnesium flakes (also known as Nigari) can be used as coagulant when making tofu at home?
How to know if you have a magnesium deficiency
Some of the symptoms and diseases that might be linked to a low magnesium level or deficiency are:
anxiety | depression | fatigue | brain fog | hypertension | mood issues | eating disorders | obesity | high blood pressure | osteoporosis |insomnia or other sleeping issues | kidney stones | irascibility | muscle spasms and cramps | muscle weakness | back & shoulder pain | rapid heartbeat | overall weakness | hypoglycemia | diabetes (type 1 and 2) | asthma | autism | chronic fatigue syndrome | fibromyalgia | migraines | thyroid disorders | poor bone strength |
How does magnesium oil work? What else to do?
Transdermal magnesium oil can help with quickly restoring magnesium levels and increases circulation, it’s amazing as a muscle relaxant, promotes the removal of toxins and draws out inflammation, it acts as a solution for relieving cramps and body aches, muscle pain and headache, menstrual pain, it can boost your entire immune system and can significantly improve your sleep quality. Because it is directly absorbed through the skin (our largest organ), it bypasses the digestive system and goes directly into our cells!
Magnesium oil can give your body an overall state of well being after a few regular uses, but please don’t expect this to work as an overnight miracle, because it won’t! OK, maybe it will, for some people, because we are all so different! :) You will see some changes if used regularly, but it’s essential to also have a balanced lifestyle and to try a more holistic approach! See the bigger picture, if you wish!
First, try to reduce external stress factors – I know, easier said than done – but try to identify stress factors in your everyday life and try to reduce them as much as you can, because magnesium deficiency is also linked to low levels of serotonin (the feel good hormone) and can even lead to chronic fatigue syndrome and other related medical issues. Baby steps are crucial here … until you can completely obliterate and eliminate all that stress from your life! You know you are stress free when you can sing all day! I feel good, tanana nana … :)
You can also try to include more whole foods into your meals and skip highly processed foods, sugar, sodas and white flour products as much as you can! That can be easily done, especially now in the summer, when there are so many fresh fruits and vegetables available! Eat the rainbow, they say! :) Let’s not forget that magnesium can be found in natural form all around us, our food included!
Here are a few examples, all rich in magnesium:
apples | blueberries | avocados | figs | apricots | bananas | almonds | leafy greens (spinach, Swiss chard) | garlic | lemons | nuts (almonds, peanuts, cashews)| seeds (pumpkin seeds) | whole grains| pineapple | legumes | grapefruit | peaches | unrefined mineral salts
Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) are really good for restoring depleted magnesium levels too, I love and often use my Epsom salt and lavender detox bath soak.
How to use magnesium oil
I love using a fine mist small spray bottles to store my magnesium oil and I just spray the solution on my arms, stomach and legs (I usually go for about 10 mists in one area), then I use my hands to quickly massage the solution into my skin, for a better absorption. I use the magnesium oil at night, after showering or after taking a relaxing bath, but I sometimes use it when I remember about it the next day – if I forgot to use it the night before. You can also use it if you have a bad general mood. Or if you have a back pain, for example, you could try and target that specific area, it might give you some relief. You might feel a tingling sensation the first times you are using it, even maybe some itching, but that’s perfectly normal, it’s your body telling you that you have a low level of magnesium and that is now getting used to its new best friend – magnesium oil! :)
In this exact form, magnesium oil can also be used as a natural, chemical free body deodorant! Again, it might take some time for your body to adapt to it, if used as a body deodorant, give it a try and see how it works for you!

What to consider when using magnesium oil
Test the magnesium oil on a small portion of your skin (your arm, for example) before liberally using it on your body.
Don’t use magnesium oil on open wounds or if you have any severe skin conditions or kidney disorders. Check with your doctor first if you have any concerns.
And please don’t forget to wash your hands really well after applying the magnesium oil on your skin, this solution is quite concentrated, you don’t want it near your eyes or your face area. Please don’t ask me how I know that! :)
Where to buy magnesium flakes and pretty bottles?
Online, of course! :) This might be the obvious choice right now, just make sure you buy pure magnesium flakes without any other suspicious ingredients. I used Westlab’s magnesium flakes and I really loved them, but now I see they are mainly available in Europe – I bought them from Amazon.de.
From what I’ve read online, the magnesium flakes sourced from the ancient Zechstein Seabed in the Netherlands are the purest, you can check here the Zechstein magnesium flakes, just get the one that works best for you, quantity and price wise.
I love using these amber spray bottles and these clear spray bottles also look really nice, but really, just use what you have on hand! You can even use a regular recycled jar or a small bottle!

white measuring cups | small whisk
gold acrylic paint | Mod Podge | small brush

How to apply the magnesium oil free printable labels?
I dry brushed a little bit of gold acrylic paint over my label, to make it even more beautiful (but this is totally optional) and then I used Mod Podge to apply the label on my spray bottle. That worked just fine and looked pretty and all … until I started actually using the magnesium oil! ;) OK, if you are really careful while holding the bottle and spraying the magnesium oil on your skin, Mod Podge might still work! I still use it like that! But I guess its oily consistency doesn’t go all that well with a water based adhesive like Mod Podge, so feel free to use something else instead if you prefer.

How to make magnesium oil at home
To make your own magnesium oil you’ll need equal parts of hot water and magnesium flakes! How easy is that?! :) I usually use 1/2 cup each to make a smaller batch and I just replenish when finished. You can use distilled water or filtered water, even regular water – if you use filtered or regular water, just boil it first to prolong the final product’s shelf life.
TIPS & TRICKS
If you want to make a specific quantity of magnesium oil for one specific bottle, fill that bottle 3/4 of the way with water, pour it into a measuring cup to measure it, then boil it and use the same amount of magnesium flakes!
So after measuring my bottle using the method mentioned above I measured 1/2 cup hot water and just added 1/2 cup magnesium flakes . I added everything to a larger cup, so I could stir them really well and I used a small whisk (you can also use a spoon) until the magnesium flakes completely dissolved into the water. It’s that easy! You will be left with your very own homemade magnesium oil!
TIPS & TRICKS:
You can even add a few drops of your favorite essential oils if you want, but give the magnesium oil the chance to cool down completely before adding the essential oils. Lavender essential oil is my favorite, it can be such great addition that also promotes a good sleep!
Pour it into your pretty bottle and use it on a regular basis to take advantage of all its amazing properties! You can also turn this easy to make magnesium oil into the perfect gift for family and friends, chances are they need a little bit of magnesium love in their lives too! :)
