Hello, creative friends! I’m happy to share another lovely project with you today – I will be showing you how to make your own DIY Metallic Gold Washi Tape! There are a few different approaches on the internet on how to create washi tape, but of course, I wanted to bring my own twist to it and create my own version. Why try this one? Because it’s quite easy to make, it’s highly customizable and the final results are absolutely amazing!
I’ve seen tutorials using double-sided tape or glue, but I wanted to keep things uncomplicated so I decided to go with sticker paper as our base for experimenting. White sticker paper looks … well, as regular white paper does and I needed to make it look and feel more like regular washi. So I decided to use one special ingredient to completely change its appearance! It’s a quite surprising ingredient, but I managed to actually give the paper that sheerness regular washi has.
I designed some French ephemera collage strips specifically for this project, but I would say that the best part of this tutorial is that you can actually use any design that you want with this technique! Can you imagine all the amazing possibilities? You can design and create DIY Metallic Gold Washi Tape on your own terms, whether it’s for a special occasion, anniversaries, a specific theme in your journal, even for your business – the sky is the limit.
Any image or text can be turned into DIY Metallic Gold Washi Tape, we are only limited by our imagination here!
I will be showing you how to:
1. Alter the paper to bring sheerness and give it a faux vellum feel
2. Paint with metallic acrylics, then add the chic golden touches using watercolors
3. Cut the strips
4. Store them as strips or roll them into washi rolls
I love adding golden touches to my projects, it’s always such an amazing adventure painting, then admiring the gorgeously gilded areas.
Different light means different metallic effects, you won’t believe how gorgeous these beauties can look! I went with metallic acrylic paint here (I used bronze, copper and gold), but I would say that la pièce de résistance was definitely the metallic gold watercolor!
white sticker paper | laserjet printer | scissors | oil (vegetable, almond, baby oil, etc.) | metallic acrylic paint (I used Mont Marte’s metallic acrylic paint) | metallic gold watercolors (I used Aquafine from Daler Rowney) | brush | paint palette (or small heart plate) | pocket binders (or a clear silicon mat) to protect your working surface
Of course, this whole project is just an experiment that would create a faux DIY washi tape effect, we won’t be able to actually create the real deal at home.
But I had so much fun and I was really proud of myself for being able to mimic some of the characteristics that you would usually look for in a washi tape – stickiness, versatility, tearability (new word, I know), sheerness and overall authenticity.
So I’m hoping my version of a DIY Metallic Gold Washi Tape would be a fun experiment for you too and a great addition to many of your creative projects!
