Make a luxurious homemade whipped body butter with only 4 ingredients and customize it as you wish with your favorite essential oils!
A new project in the DIY beauty department, today we are making the most amazing homemade whipped body butter!
You will be surprised by how easy it is to make it and you will be blown away by how creamy and moisturizing this stuff is. And please be prepared to say goodbye to store bought body butters that you’ve been using so far! You will love my version of a homemade whipped body butter so much that it will be the only thing you will put on your skin. Like foreva’! :)
To make this silky homemade whipped body butter you will need equal parts of sweet almond oil (or olive oil), Shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil. You can then customize it with one of your favorite essential oil or with a mix consisting of 2-3 essential oils. You can look at this homemade whipped body butter as your base for endless experimenting with different fragrances, but you can also use it like it is, without adding any essential oils.
I recently found online and bought some measuring cups that are proving to be really helpful for food recipes but also for this kind of beauty recipes. I would suggest buying two sets if planning on giving them multiple uses. I use my beauty set only for measuring beauty ingredients and not for food related ingredients.
For today’s recipe, I cut the ingredients that needed chopping in small chunks and measured them afterwards.
You will also need some pretty jars, everything looks better in pretty jars! :) I used one of my Vintage French Apothecary Jars that I made not so long ago, make sure you check that post … if you haven’t already. I usually have a few Frenchified jars in different sizes that I use as home decor and this way I can also have them ready whenever I need one for any other project.
How to make Homemade Whipped Body Butter
- 1/3 cup sweet almond oil or olive oil
- 1/3 cup Shea butter
- 1/3 cup cocoa butter
- 1/3 cup coconut oil
20 drops of your favorite essential oils- a vintage French apothecary jar
- Gather all the ingredients and measure 1/3 cup each.
- Put them in a glass or porcelain bowl.
- Melt them using a double boiler or over a pan of boiling water. Whisk until completely melted.
- Remove from the heat, let it cool down a little (for about 10-15 min) and add the essential oils. Whisk again. Put the bowl in the fridge for about 1 hour, until the mixture hardens.
- Remove from the fridge and start whipping the mixture using a hand mixer for about 1-3 minutes.
- While whipping, its texture and color will gradually start to change from flat yellow-ish to creamy and silky white.
- Spoon it into a lovely jar or glass recipient and apply it after taking a bath, while your skin is still wet.
- Enjoy!
I love using lavender on just about everything so lavender essential oil was my first and only choice!;) Your skin will smell amazing after using the lavender infused homemade whipped body butter. I usually take a long bath, pat dry my skin with a towel and apply the butter while my skin is still a little wet. This way the butter is absorbed more quickly, leaving you with a soft and hydrated skin.

Did you know that the great majority of beauty products that we can find in stores today contain harsh ingredients filled with chemicals that are absorbed by our skin? Even though we feel that we are nourishing our skins at that moment, we are in fact attacking it (and our health) with all those nasty unpronounceable ingredients. I’m horrified even thinking about this! I have no idea how we ended up in this situation, with stores packed with harmful beauty products and sometimes I don’t get why we accept this situation. Because we accept it when we buy those products. But we can easily fight this by making our own products! I guess this is one of the many reasons I love making my own homemade beauty products, the ability of controlling and choosing the right ingredients. So I usually try to find raw / organic / unrefined ingredients, ones that are as close as possible to their natural form and are not processed too much.
Treat yourself with this homemade whipped body butter or turn it into a gift for someone you love!
Smile often,
Diana

I made this body butter last week and it is beyond AMAZING!!! I searched and analyzed many recipes. I wanted one with cocoa butter and I got a good feel from this blog and trusted that the recipe was tried and oh so true. The texture of this butter is unbelievable and it goes on and absorbs beautifully. The smell before adding essential oils is heavenly and nurturing. I tripled the recipe and filled 6 8oz. jars because I want to give as gifts. I used orange essential oil and I love it and want to try again with peppermint. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT and you will too!!! Thank you Diana! <3
Diana / Dreams Factory
Terry, I’m so happy you love it!
I have the same feeling every time I’m using it, I just love how moisturizing this stuff is. Not to mention the smell, which is so important because it can instantly lift up your spirit, especially after a long stressful day.
Orange essential oil is on my short list of favorites. I haven’t used it with this body butter but I have a heavenly coffee sugar scrub with orange essential oils that I will be posting soon. It’s the bomb! :)
As for peppermint, I think it would be amazing for a refreshing summer recipe!
Thanks for stopping by and for your lovely comment, Terry! ♥

I made this recipe but it makes me so oily after using it did I do it wrong ?
Diana / Dreams Factory
Body butters are quite oily, in general.
You could try applying a smaller amount to your skin, I like to apply it when my skin is partially wet, after taking a shower or a bath.
You could add 1/4 or 1/2 tsp arrowroot powder while whipping it, it should cut some of the greasiness out. I haven’t tried this on my own, please let me know how it turns out if you do.
Sandy
Once you make the body butter, how long is it good for?
kikib
Body butter should last about 6 months, as long as it’s stored away from light. Using a tinted glass jar (dark blue or brown, for example, are common colours for body products) helps to extend the life of the product. And, if you add vitamin E liquid to your body butter, this will also help to naturally preserve the product (plus, vitamin E is good for your skin!). :)
Tannis
I followed the recipe and it is really nice but wondering about the cocoa seed butter. No matter how much lavender I added (which was a lot) the cocoa butter continues to overpower everything else. My daughter walked into the room and asked why it smelled like chocolat? Ssme when I made bath bombs with coconut oil and the coconut overpowers the essential oils. And I’m putting a lot in.
Any advice on this and how long does it last as no preservatives have been added?
Deborah
I’m not sure if this holds true for all, but I have two jars of organic coconut oil that I just smelled. One is virgin cold-pressed, unrefined and one is not. The virgin cold-pressed definitely has a smell of cocoa, while the other does not. Perhaps give it another try.
Diana / Dreams Factory
Tannis, if you find the smell of the cocoa butter too overwhelming, here are a few suggestions:
1. you can simply remove the cocoa butter from the recipe or
2. replace it with the same amount of shea butter or
3. replace it with other butters (like avocado or mango butter)
The texture might be a little different, but I think they should all work just fine.
Hope this helps, please come back if you try them and have any news :)
Brooke
Haha Awesome recipe!!! I left out the almond oil but still feels great. I saw above you said 6 month shelf life, what if i put it in the fridge, could that help? Thanks!
Diana / Dreams Factory
Hey Brooke,
Happy you like it!:)
This body butter does have a long shelf life, indeed. It can keep even for years.
But I would say it really depends on the ingredients! You can check the expiration date for each product you use in this recipe – the shortest expiration date will give you an idea of the shelf life for the finished product.
I personally love making one or two batches at a time, so I can experiment with different essential oils combos :)
I wouldn’t keep it in the fridge – because it will harden, it will change texture and it will be more difficult to use.
Sheila
I made this for my mother and I and we both absolutely love it! I used different oils and we didn’t have any cocoa butter (doubled up on she’s butter), but it’s amazing!! It was inspired by a small jar of whipped body butter that my mother bought for $25(!!!) because she thought it may be good for my psoriasis. It helped, so we decided to try our own to save money. I’m so happy you’ve shared this recipe!! I’ll be making it for my mother and I again, as well as for people for Christmas gifts!!
Diana / Dreams Factory
I’m so happy you like this project!
That’s the beauty of making this kind of products yourself, you can usually make them so much cheaper than their store bough versions.
Hope your mother feels better, best regards!
Laurie
Mine keeps turning back to liquid form, what am I doing wrong?
Diana / Dreams Factory
Laurie, at what stage of the process does the butter turn into liquid again?
Can you be more specific?
Cherice
Hi – Can you make this without the essential oils or will that change the composition?
Diana / Dreams Factory
You can totally make it without the essential oils, the ‘base’ will not be modified.
Lindsey
Can I add arrowroot so it isn’t as oily? I’ve seen other recipes call for that but didn’t know if it would work well with this one!
Diana / Dreams Factory
Lindsey, I haven’t tried adding arrowroot because this formula works so great for my skin type.
If you do, please let me know how it goes.
Dee
Hi Diana
I just came across your post via Pinterest.
I have tried several Body Butter recipes and had a lot of ‘challenges’ . Then I decided to think ‘outside the box’.
I decided instead of giving up…especially how expensive the ingredients are, I decided to add a small amount of white beeswax pastilles, and make it into Body Butter sticks (using empty deodorant containers).
I encourage you to give it a try…I just know you will have another item to add to your inventory.
Best regards
Diana / Dreams Factory
What a great idea, Dee!
I love the beeswax pastilles addition, I will definitely give this a try!
Michelle
Hi what ratio/amount are you adding to make the body butter sticks?
Misty
Could you replace the almond oil with jojoba oil?
Diana / Dreams Factory
I haven’t used jojoba oil for this one, but I don’t see why not!
Elena
Hi, I just tried making this body butter, but no matter what I do, I can’t get it from liquid to whipped form :( do you have any advice? Thanks.
Diana / Dreams Factory
Hi Elena, that has never happened to me, but it should be solid before whipping it, not liquid.
So it’s the liquid form first (when melting the ingredients) – the solid stage (when refrigerated) and then the whipping.
Hope you managed to make it eventually, it’s still one of my favorites recipes.
kathy dinicola
I made this and the next day it was separated. Any ideas on what I did wrong? I’m going to try one more time….
Diana / Dreams Factory
Hey, Kathy! Separated as in completely melted?
This shouldn’t happen if you refrigerate the ingredients first, just like stated in the recipe and then whip the body butter with your mixer until completely emulsified.
The only thing that I can think of is that maybe it was extremely hot where you live?
You could try to slightly decrease the amount of one of the oils and slightly increase the amount of cocoa butter. And maybe keep it in the fridge between uses, instead of your counter.
Hope this helps, let me know how it goes! :)
kathy dinicola
I tried again and it worked well. I think i may have refrigerated too long the first time? I’m in San Francisco so weather isn’t really a factor most of the year. :) I added a bit of arrowroot powder this time around and the result was great. Thanks so much!
Diana / Dreams Factory
That’s so great to hear, Kathy!
Sometimes it’s all about experimenting, adapting and not giving up! :)
Jennifer Waldren
Thank you for sharing this recipe! It’s a tiny bit too oily for me, but I still love it. The previous recipe I was using did not yield a “whipped butter” texture, but this turned out just like the picture and looked good enough to spread on toast! Lol! I’m looking forward to mixing up a Christmas scent to share with my friends and family. Thank you so much, Diana!
Diana / Dreams Factory
So happy you like my recipe, Jennifer!
You could add 1/4 or 1/2 tsp arrowroot powder while whipping it, it should cut some of the greasiness out. I haven’t tried this on my own, please let me know how it turns out if you do.
Or you could use some water on your skin while actually applying the body butter, this is my preferred method for a better absorption.
I’m contemplating the idea of making some Christmas scents on my own, I’ll share the results if I do.
And I know what you mean about spreading it on toast, it looks really … appetizing! :)
Christina Karabanova
Just made it yesterday and it turned out perfectly ! Unfortunately, I didn’t have an essential oil to make it more perfect, but anyways the texture is amazing! It’s a real butter :) next time will add my favorite bergamot oil 🥰thank you for your recipe 👏🏻
Diana / Dreams Factory
The texture is what makes this recipe really amazing, I’m always amazed by how buttery it is when I make it, even after all these years! :)
Magdalena Anna
I whipped it but there are chunks of cocoa butter that didn’t blend in. How can I remedy that?
Diana / Dreams Factory
You could whip it some more if that happens again, or just remelt everything and try again! :)
Katie Reid
Hello, I was looking into making this for my sister as she is pregnant to have as a super hydrating lotion for her belly. Do you find using the almond oil is smells nutty? Sorry if this is a silly question this will be my first time trying this but want to do homemade gifts. Have you used other kinds of oils in this recipe or do the oils not really provide a huge scent?
If I wanted to make it tropical like could i do mango butter and coconut oil or apricot kernel oil?
Diana / Dreams Factory
Hey, Katie! The almond oil I’m using is odorless, it doesn’t provide any scent.
The cocoa butter infuses a chocolatey scent, and you can smell the coconut oil a little bit, but the essential oils are the ones that really give the direction in this recipe.
Love your idea of giving this a more tropical vibe, but from what I know, mango butter and apricot oil are odorless too. You could use mango butter to replace shea butter, as they have similar properties and the apricot oil instead of the sweet almond oil. And maybe infuse the tropical vibe with some essential oils! :) Ylang-Ylang, Bergamot, Sweet Orange, Lime, Jasmine, Patchouli are some ideas, you can use them on their own or create your own mixes.
You should also check online which essential oils are safe for pregnancies, I know there are a few of them that are not recommended.
