Today we are making the most amazing scented eggshell candles, perfect for Easter or spring! :)
Remember my last post when I showed you how to make Easter egg planters and paint them in pretty pastels? And remember how I told you to keep some eggshells for a future project? Well, today we are using those eggshells and some other natural ingredients like soy flakes and essential oils to make some beautiful homemade candles! Are you in?:)
And yes, I am using Easter and spring as an excuse to make more candles… because you can never have too many candles, right? :)
Especially pretty and scented ones, that you can use all around your home and easily integrate into your Easter or spring vignettes, use as Easter centerpieces or just gift them to all your family and friends. Oh, the amazing possibilities!
How to make scented eggshell candles
1. Gather your supplies: painted eggshells // wicks// soy flakes // parchment paper // essential oils
Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links so you can easily find the products I love. See more of my favorites {HERE}.
2. Melt your soy flakes using a double broiler and stir with a wooden spoon (I used a set of Chinese chopsticks) until all the flakes are completely melted. Let the soy wax sit for a few minutes before pouring.
3. If you want your final scented eggshell candles to stand on their own, proceed and make the cool trick I also did for my Easter egg planters. (If not, find yourself an empty egg carton or a lovely porcelain egg box to hold your eggshells and skip to step 4.)
To make a base for each candle, align some parchment paper on a plain surface and using your wooden spoon (or your chopsticks) dribble a few drops from the melted candle wax in one place. Take one eggshell, put it into that spot and gently press it down, holding it with your fingers for a few seconds, until the wax base hardens.
See? These two lovelies in pretty pastels can now stand on their own! :) Do the same for each eggshell and create wax bases for all of them.
4. Put the wicks into the eggshells and center them.
5. Add your favorite essential oils into the melted wax and stir some more – this step is my favorite, I used lavender essential oils, as always :) But of course you can choose any other fragrance.
6. Pour the soy wax into the eggshells and center the wick again, if necessary.
TIP: Pour the melted candle wax into your final recipient only after it cools down a little, I found that if you pour it when it’s too hot, the candle it will crackle around the wick when it hardens.
When melted, the soy candle has a slight yellowish color, but after it will completely harden, it will turn into a beautiful white.
7. Let them sit for a few hours.
8. Gently remove the scented eggshell candles from the parchment paper, being careful not to break the candle wax base.
And… you are done! You have just created the most amazing scented eggshell candles! :)
Now let’s move to the decorating part!
This part is quite easy, because I love using things that I already have in my home… and just reinvent them. Polka dots always look … so happy to me so I decided to use a little bit of yellow and white polka dots fabric. We all need some happy looking pop of color for the beginning of the spring, right? :) I cut the fabric into small quarters, I cut some parchment paper into small circles and found some paper doilies laying around in my kitchen . They were all perfect so I used them (underneath the scented eggshell candles) to create some layers.
Fresh flowers or greens will add some great texture to your decor. I used a small boxwood branch, but you can also get creative on this part and use rosemary, mint, lemon leaves, blossom tree branches or some other good looking natural materials.
Don’t you think that now my candle looks like a beautiful cup of tea, with an elegant vintage looking porcelain saucer? :)
I love that you can do so many things with these amazing scented eggshell candles, just use your imagination and create simple but beautiful vignettes, perfect for your home, both for Easter and spring.
And let’s just not forget that your home will smell amazing from all that incredibly fragrant essential oil, making your home fresh for the holidays!
TIPs and tricks:
- Paint the eggshells in your favorite colors, but try to keep in mind the colors you have in your home or the colors you will be using for Easter decorating, so that you can follow the same color scheme.
- If you don’t have or can’t find soy flakes to make the eggshell candles, use paraffin candle wax, bees wax or any kind of candles (even leftovers). Just melt them following all the steps above.
- If you don’t feel like melting anything, use simple or scented tea light candles* instead. Remove their metal base and just slip them right in the eggshells. It won’t be the same as melting and pouring, but you will get a similar look.
- Be careful when you burn your scented eggshell candles for a longer period of time! The wax bases that help the candles stand on their own might melt! So don’t leave the candles untended, we sure don’t want any unfortunate incidents for Easter!
That’s it for today, have fun creating your own scented eggshell candles. And … let’s have the most amazing spring ever! ♥
