Nice to see you again, hope you all had some great holidays, filled with love, peace and … more love! ♥
Things have been crazy for us just before Christmas and a little bit exhausting all year long, so I decided it was time for another reset. I knew I needed to take a break from all social media and just enjoy a few days off … and offline. No work, no emails, no smartphone, no laptop, no Facebook, no Pinterest, no Instagram, no internet access. Best decision ever! Maybe for some people that might sound like the end of the world, but trust me, it’s not … I survived! :) You should try that sometimes, even if it is just for clearing your head a little bit and just unplug from all the things that keep us so wired and connected. I need these resets every now and then but only to come back with fully recharged batteries! :)
And the perfect project for the beginning of this (what I’m hoping to be an amazing) year:
DIY Shabby Gold Inspirational Wood Sign + a free printable
I decided to go with this amazing quote for my sign:
”What if I fall? Oh my darling, but what if you fly?” – Erin Hanson
I initially found the quote on Pinterest a while ago and lovedddd it! I searched for its author and discovered Erin, a 20 year old writer from Australia, a truly gifted and talented person – you can find some of her beautiful poems on The Poetic Underground. I loved Erin’s quote so much I knew I would use it on one of my projects someday and after it (accidentally or not) kept popping on my Pinterest , I decided to use it on a sign … and include it in my resolutions list for this new year! :)
The Shabby gold inspirational wood sign is super easy to make, I’ll show you a trick on how to faux distress the edges and create a Shabby Chic border in no time.
The first thing to do is paint a wooden board white (I used a 20*40 cm wood board) and let it dry completely. To create the Shabby Chic effect on the edges, just put some black or gray paint on your index finger and slowly paint around the sign’s margins, putting less or more pressure – we want an irregular looking border, so don’t be afraid, there are no mistakes here :) If you think that the black/gray paint is too strong, let it dry a little bit and using a small brush go over the edges again with a small amount of dry white paint. The best part about painting like this is that if you decide to make lets’s say 5 signs, you’ll get different Shabby Chic effects on each one and therefore 5 unique signs! [Inserting here a little love for all truly unique and original handmade things]
For the next step I printed the gold printable I made using Photoshop on waterslide decal paper and applied the decals on the wood sign. You already know how much I love using decals for transferring an image – you can read all about waterslide decals here.
Here is the ”What if I fall? Oh my darling, but what if you fly?” gold printable that you download for free and use to create your own Shabby gold inspirational wood sign.

Please use it for personal projects only and link back to this article when using it. Thanks.
When printing a gold text, a printer will only give you a similar looking effect, but no sparkle and shine. No fun there :) So I wanted to add a little more glimmer to my sign and emphasize the golden text more. I used a small brush to paint the letters with a beautiful metallic gold acrylic paint.
When I was done painting, all that gold gave me cravings … So I made my new favorite-yellow-hot-drink-perfect-for-this-weather! :) All healthy and oh so tasty with lemon, turmeric and ginger … a little sunshine in a cup! :)
Of course you can also use any other image transfer technique or even use some carbon paper to trace the lettering and then hand paint them on your wooden sign, there are many possibilities when it comes to image transfers.
The Shabby gold inspirational wood sign can be easily used to style a corner of your home with some Shabby painted books, an Ikea pitcher with seasonal tree branches and paper angel wings, candle holders, some gold ribbon and a small angel figurine.
Speaking of angel wings, you can download my French script angel wings on card stock paper, also paint them in gold and just add some more gold ribbon to match the whole gorgeous glittering effect.
Or if you are looking for a shortcut to all the things mentioned before … you could just print the “What if I fall” printable on regular paper and put it in a frame! :) And guess what, the metallic gold paint can also be used on regular paper, so it could be a great addition in this case too.
I’ve mentioned before that I’m not always a fan of gold and I have periods of time when I hate it and some periods of time when I just love it… I guess now the last part applies :) I made the printable in Photoshop using an amazing and super easy technique that I’ve learned recently – how to create gold text effect in Photoshop. I’m a beginner when it comes to Photoshop but it slowly starts to grow on me. I’ll tell you more about it soon, as I’m planning to share some of my Photoshop finds with you in some future posts so you can create gold text effect images and printables for your home, your blog, your everything :)
What about you, what other inspirational quotes would you use as resolutions for this new year?
Until next time, don’t forget to smile,
Diana

I’m in the gold loving stage right now too :)
Dear Diana, don’t know how I missed stopping by for this one. Wow – one of my favorite quotes ever! There’s such love and support implied in the answer to the question posed by fear. I believe in you, and your work, just like this. Everything you do is a leap that results in a graceful soaring winged thing of beauty.
Thank you again and again for all the confidence and support, my dear Heather!
I love how anyone can FEEL and relate to it on it’s own personal way.
Adorable! I love it. Also, good for you for taking some time to yourself. Sometimes we need a break from all the electronics. :)
Glad you like mys sign, Jenn! :)
I try to take short breaks during the day, but sometimes everything gets so overwhelming I just need a few days off.
Love… It is beautiful! The gold perfect. I like the idea about unplugging from the electronic’s I need to adopt that in our home. Great job.

So happy you find this inspiring, maybe you will give it a try :)
I will come back for more DIY Coletive! :)
What white and black paint did you use for painting the wood?
I used acrylic paint for this project, but chalk paint or milk paint will work too.
Have fun creating! :)
That is such an inspiring quote and a beautiful sign to keep the message in the front of your mind. I did the same thing over the holidays taking a break from blogging and social media and I agree that it was such a good decision. It is so easy to NEED to keep up on all that, but it doesn’t it make it easy to relax when you are constantly checking everything. One of my goals for this year is to cut back on wasting countless hours on those things :) Can’t wait to see all the incredible things you do this year!
Thank you for your lovely comment, Jamie! ♥
There are so many things going on in every second of our lives that keeping up with everything seems harder and harder nowadays. We need to prioritize in order to keep THE right track! And I know, that sounds great in theory and all, applying it is the real challenge :)
Can’t wait to see your amazing project and ideas, too, you have such good tastes and such an amazing talent!
