If you ever wanted to try making your own homemade sugar scrub, I have the perfect recipe for you today! You will only need 4 ingredients to make this scrumptious DIY Rose Petal & Lavender Sugar Scrub in just a few minutes so you’ll be able to enjoy your own mini SPA at home!
Until a few years ago, I was a person that wouldn’t mind spending a small fortune on store bought ‘trendy’ beauty products. I used to regularly refill my stash with different make-up products and body butters were my secret obsession :) My shelves were filled with all kind of beauty products that I ‘really needed’ for my daily beauty routine. Or at least ones that I thought I really needed.
Back then I was not really concerned with reading any labels and for me quality meant expensive. My logic was simple – expensive products must be the best ones!
But in the last couple of years I started to actually read the labels. Not in an obsessive way, but in a ‘I want to know what I use on my body‘ kind of way. It was like waking up from a bad dream, only to realize that until then I willingly participated in gradually poisoning my skin and my body. All those nasty-unpronounceable-filled-with-chemicals ingredients I found on the back on my beauty products simply terrified me and I knew that some major changes were in order!
So I started perusing the internet and Pinterest was such a big helper in finding all kind of amazing recipes that you can actually make at home! I started documenting myself and I discovered some incredible ingredients that could be used for creating luxurious homemade beauty products, some that would easily compete with the ones found in any stores.
I discovered essential oils and I started using them more and more. Did you know that essential oils are aromatic liquids that you can naturally find in different part of plants, flowers, herbs, fruits, wood and even spices? They are considered to be the most powerful vital source of the plant and have the capacity of strengthening our immunity system and stimulating our bodies’ natural healing aptitudes. I sure want that in my beauty products!
I discovered some amazing ways of using Shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, cocoa butter, epsom salts and with small steps I started creating my own homemade beauty products. I feel like I have my very own secret lab where I get to play with different ingredients and fragrances. A little bit of DIY in the beauty department, I will share with you more of my findings soon!
And speaking of DIY, remember that in one of my recent posts I shared with you an easy but super chic DIY Vintage French Apothecary Jars and Bottles project? Well, I hope you already made some of those jars, because you’ll need (at least) one for today’s project! :)
DIY Rose Petal & Lavender Sugar Scrub
Let’s talk ingredients, first! The best part about this type of homemade sugar scrub recipes is that you can make different changes according to your own likes, but also improvise and adapt to things that you already have in your home, or to those that are much more easier to find in your area.
I used the petals from a rose (that are still blooming in amazing pink shades in our garden), sweet almond oil, granulated sugar and a few drops of lavender essential oil. And one beautiful apothecary jar – the fifth element if you wish! :)
You can substitute almond oil to olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil.
You can use roses from your garden, dried petal roses or you can completely remove the petals and just add a few drops of rose essential oils. Your scrub won’t have so much texture, but I’m sure it will smell amazing!
You could replace granulated sugar with sea salt, epsom salt or with brown sugar. If using brown sugar the ‘visual effects’ won’t be the same for this recipe, but will be perfect for others.
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup almond oil
- 10-15 drops lavender essential oil
- petals from 1 rose
- apothecary jar
- popsicle stick or small spoon (for stirring)
- Put the sugar in a glass or porcelain bowl.
- Add the essential oil drops into the almond oil and pour them over the sugar.
- Tear the rose petals in small pieces and use the popsicle stick to slowly mix them all together.
- Put your homemade sugar scrub in a beautiful apothecary jar and use it 1-3 times a week (apply it on wet skin, using a circular motion)
You can add more or less almond oil. Start with a small amount first and add more until you get to the consistency you like. Experiment, experiment, experiment! :)
The apothecary jar is a must in this case, if you ask me. This way you can easily turn the DIY Rose Petals & Lavender Sugar Scrub into an amazing homemade gift for any special occasions, one that your friends will actually love and use! You can choose the jar with the French label and this beautiful Shabby pink rose or any other apothecary jar from the stash. Because it doesn’t contain any preservatives, a homemade sugar scrub made with fresh ingredients (the rose petals in this case), will keep for about two weeks (in an airtight jar, in a cold place). If you want to extend its life shelf, you can skip the rose petals and even add one teaspoon vitamin E oil.

This would make a wonderful Christmas gift, made by hand with love. I love the rose petals in it, but I would probably opt for the vitamin E oil for it to be preserved a little longer. Thanks so much for sharing at Celebrate Your Story!
