DIY Gold Foil Butterfly Stickers using a laminator – learn how you can easily turn a black and white image into a gorgeous gilded image using a laminator, then paint it with your favorite watercolors!
Hello, creative friends! Today I’m sharing with you an easy and beautiful DIY project – some super chic DIY Gold Foil Butterfly stickers, which will be absolutely perfect to integrate into many creative projects!
It’s always great to have some super chic stickers around, you never know when you might need them, right? :) The gold foil will give the stickers a gorgeous metallic feel and the beautiful hints of watercolors will give that subtle and dreamy pop-of-color that we all love.
This is more like an experiment because we will be using a black and white butterfly printable as our starting point and I will show you my favorite technique for quickly adding that amazing touch of gold foil all over it. It’s really an amazing technique that can be done using … a laminator! I know, it might sound strange at first, but this really works in a blink of an eye! The best part is that you can use any other black and white images that you want, this will open up so many possibilities for getting creative and well … gold foiling everything! :)
This technique basically uses the heating properties of the laminator to activate the gold foil, so we could call it a heat-activated metallic foil transfer. It would be ideal to use a gold foil machine like a Minc, that is specifically designed for a heat-activated metallic foil transfer, but a laminator will work fine too. The final results might not be as consistent, but it will still be mind-blowing to see the black and white image transform into a golden beauty right before your eyes!
I’m using gold foil because I love everything that gilded lately, but if you want to take a different road with this, there are plenty of other metallic foil colors to choose from.
Also, one really important thing – you will need to print your images using a laserjet printer, an inkjet printer won’t work! If you don’t have a laserjet printer, go to a copy center … or ask a friend who does! :)
Gold foil or gold leaf? What to use for this project?
Please keep in mind that we will need metallic gold foil for this project, not gold leaf!
If you have never used gold foil before and have no idea where to find it, you could try searching for it on Amazon first! Depending on where you live in the world, you might have better luck searching for it in physical or other online craft stores. This foil is also called metallic foil or heat transfer metallic foil and it can be used with a special foiling machine like a Minc or a laminator.
Metallic foil comes in other gorgeous colors too, but please keep in mind that no matter if it’s gold, silver, copper, rose gold, blue or any other color, metallic foil ALWAYS has a silver backside, as opposed to gold leaf, which has the same gold color on both sides.
Another thing to keep in mind while searching for metallic foil is that it usually comes in rolls or Us Letter / A4 size variations and can be easily cut according to your needs, as opposed to gold leaf which usually comes in smaller sheets or flakes.
Heidi Swapp Foil, Deco foil and Gemini foil are a few examples of metallic foils, but there are other brands too.
I have to confess that these images are not making total justice to these gorgeous DIY Gold Foil Butterfly Stickers, they look so much better in real life! So I guess you’ll just have to make them to see it for yourself! :) Just admire them in different lighting, throughout the day, you will be amazed how different they look. There’s something magical about gold foil that is absolutely stunning!
You’ll just want to gold foil everything after trying this technique, I think these black and white stickers that I designed for you a while ago would also look amazing when gilded!
