DIY Folded Book Christmas Tree with gold foil star – learn how to make a beautiful an inexpensive Christmas tree using a book! Perfect for Christmas decorating!
Hello, friends! Inspiration can come from anywhere, but let’s just face it, most of the time, it really comes from… Pinterest! :) Ever since I saw one of these trees a few years back while perusing through Christmas projects, I just knew I would make one for our home one day. But you know how it is, things kind of precipitate a little bit too much around Christmas and I never really got around making one of these beauties. Until today! :)
And I’m really happy that I did! It’s quite easy to make it, but I have to warn you – it will require some of your time! Not too much, because you can actually relax and watch a Netflix movie while doing all the folding. OK, you can also watch one of those Hallmark movies with a girl-falls-for-the-small-town-hunk-while-totally-ignoring-the-big-city-CEO plot, almost identical with the one you just saw :) With a lot of snow and Christmas cheesiness!? Will I just keep watching them? Yes, yes, yes! Of course! :)
DIY Folded Book Christmas Tree with gold foil star
The first thing you’ll need to make the beautiful Christmas tree … is a book, obviously! :) You can use an old or a new book, it doesn’t really matter. The older the book, the more vintage looking. Not a bad thing, if you ask me! :) You can even make more trees, in several different sizes to add some interest to your home decor, and once you’ll see how easy it is to actually make them, I have a feeling you’ll just want to make more and more!
Supplies:
- a book
- paper glue stick
- cardstock
- heat transfer foil
- scissors
- a toothpick
Start by ripping the cover of your book, but make sure you keep (fairly) intact the glue spine that’s keeping the pages together, that will be the starting point of our tree!
I’m including the whole folding process in the collage below, to keep things fairly uncomplicated. You can use this collage to save the project on Pinterest for later, if you want!
My first pages had a few images and quite a few blank spaces, so for demonstrating purposes, I’m showing you here the folding technique starting from the middle of the book. But you should start folding the first page of your book!
1. Fold down the top right of your page until it perfectly lines up with the spine and creates a 90° angle.
2. Fold the same page another time until the edge lines up again with the spine.
3. Fold upwards the paper that hangs over the bottom, this time lining it up with the base of the book. Finger trace all the lines again to create sturdy folds.
4. Turn the page and repeat the same 3 folds on all the following pages. You can fold all the pages from your book, but you will only need about 80-100 pages to get a nice full tree. If you are only half way through your book and reach the 80-100 limit, you can tear the spine again in half (keeping both of them intact) and make another beautiful tree!
5. When you are done with all the folding, glue the first and the last page of your tree together and let the glue dry. Place your tree on a flat surface and arrange the pages and the folds if needed, to create a visually symmetric look.
6. For the gold star, start by folding a piece of card stock and trace and cut a star shape. When folding the card stock and then cutting, you will get 2 identical shapes, making it easier to overlap and glue them afterwards. I skipped the tracing part and my stars were not ‘perfect’. But at least they were identical :) And you know I always try to embrace imperfections in my projects, so I decided I kind of liked their somehow odd shape :)
Now for the gilding part! Oh, how I simply love this part! :) I have recently discovered heat transfer foil and I just ADORE it! If you have used this stuff before, I’m sure you can totally relate and get my excitement! :) If not, what are you waiting for? :) It really opens up a whole new world of experimenting, I can’t wait to have some time during the holidays so I can play and try new things with it! To create the beautiful golden effect on my stars I used just a little piece of heat transfer foil … but I actually haven’t used any heat! :) As it turns out, the foil can be used with a regular paper stick glue, creating an almost vintage and distressed gold effect. Totally what I wanted for my book! :)
Then I added some paper glue to my stars and ‘sandwiched’ a toothpick in the middle. The spine of the book will create a hole in the middle, so I just put the toothpick (with my stars) in there, without using anymore glue. This is great because if you ever get bored of your gold foil star – not sure how would that ever happen, but if it does – you can simply replace it with something else :)
That’s it! I told you it was easy! :) Now you can create a DIY Folded Book Christmas Tree with gold foil star for pretty much every room in your home! At least that’s what I’ll do! :)
The best part is that the book trees are quite neutral and easy to integrate in any home! Just use a few greenery branches, some cinnamon sticks, small or larger Christmas ornaments from your stash … or basically anything that you have around to keep a cohesive Christmas theme for your home.
I used this lovely angel that I have from my sister (love you, sis) and created a small Christmasy scene. How cute is that!? :)
You can also add other larger angel statues or other Christmas related objects to create more interest, there are so many possibilities to get creative here!
That’s it for today, I hope you will give this project a try and make a beautiful DIY Folded Book Christmas Tree with gold foil star for your home! Or why not, give it as a gift to someone you love! :)
Don’t forget to smile,
Diana
