DIY 3D Vintage Bee Tags & how to print on acrylic paint backgrounds – learn how to make these amazing bee tags using my revolutionary technique of printing on acrylic paint backgrounds!
Hello, friends! It’s time for another beautiful DIY project, this time I’ll be sharing with you a super exciting technique that will allow you to make these bee tags first, but will also open up so many other new doors of further experimenting and getting creative!
The free printable that I created for this project is truly beautiful on its own, don’t you think? It has a little bit of that French flair that we all love – French ephemeras, handwritten French elements, French stamps and Carte Postale elements – but I would say that the bumblebee image is really what makes this printable stunning! Because I wanted to give the tags a 3D look, I went outside the vintage frame’s borders with the bumblebee image, but I also included a smaller set of wings that can be glued on top, to create even more interest! I like going outside the borders in general with things -I’m quite a rebel, I know :), but sometimes you just have to do that, in order to push your limits and step out of your comfort zone! I’m really in love with how they turned out, hope you will love them too!
The experimenting with acrylic paint part was also super exciting because you never know where you’ll end up with these types of experiments! :) You have the opportunity of putting your abstract paint artist hat on and playing with different colors, blending techniques, creating textures and trying new things. Adding your personal touches, making your own pieces of art!
You’ll see that I tried something different with these DIY 3D Vintage Bee Tags! Instead of printing the tags first and making them pretty afterwards, I actually had the idea of painting the acrylic paint backgrounds first and printing the tags after. I’m calling this “my revolutionary technique” and I honestly don’t know how I never thought about this before! Because it’s brilliant! :) I wasn’t sure it would even work, but I was over the moon when it did! What’s really amazing is that you can use this technique to make the bee tags (of course), but you can also paint your acrylic paint backgrounds and then use them to print any other of your favorite images on top! Use Photoshop (or your preferred editing tool) to make other collages, add images, text or wording, use your favorite fonts to create lovely quotes and use them as tags to embellish gifts but also add them to your art journals, junk journals, bullet journals, use them for home decor, there really endless possibilities here!
My revolutionary technique – how to print on acrylic paint backgrounds
Even though my revolutionary technique – how to print on acrylic paint backgrounds is pretty straightforward there are a few things you need to consider before trying this technique. What types of printers work, what types of paper can be used, what you need to keep on eye on when actually painting the acrylic paint backgrounds and applying the paint – these are just a few of them. As you can see, you need to consider most of them before actually printing and if you are a bit careful about all these details, you won’t have any problems while actually feeding your paper through your printer.
To make the acrylic paint backgrounds you will have the opportunity of choosing your preferred colors, of learning how to easily blend the acrylic paints, how to use stencils but also everyday items like jars and bubble wrap to add texture and create visually appealing effects. You will also (most likely) make mistakes (like I always do), but that’s OK, you know how I always encourage mistakes on my projects, because they can be just the perfect opportunities of learning new things! I would say that the best part about these acrylic paint backgrounds is the choice you have to pour some of your soul and your present emotions into them! They can be YOU in this moment of time!
And the most challenging part about these acrylic paint backgrounds? Would be learning when to stop! :) It’s quite easy to go overboard with these because you want to try all the new techniques that you’ve maybe seen online, new tools and paints but I would say to just start small and gradually build from there. And when you are happy (or unhappy) with what you created at one point, just stop, take a break and come back after 5 minutes and see if you feel the same :) Rotate the page, look at it from different angles and if you think you need to add something new or correct anything, just do it, but keep in mind we don’t have ‘undo’ buttons in real life – even though they would be sooo good to have around sometimes! :)

So I will be showing you:
- how to prepare your paper before painting
- how to paint the backgrounds with acrylic paint using 2 different colors (and some white here and there)
- how to easily blend the paints using a craft sponge to create a mixed media abstract background
- how to use stencils to add texture and everyday items to add shapes and more visual effects
- how to use your palette knife to add more interest
- how to apply paint using your fingers – such a cool feeling! :)
- how to add gold acrylic paint for highlights and metallic shines – my favorite part
- how to correct mistakes using paint
- how to turn an almost failed background (the ochre-blue one) into a success using … baby wipes! :)
- how to dry the paper before printing
- how to print on these acrylic paint backgrounds
My acrylic paint backgrounds looked like this after performing all these magic tricks on them! :)
It’s such an amazing feeling admiring all the details after finishing these beauties and recalling all the steps, the feelings, the mistakes, sometimes the frustrations that got you to these final stunning results! But we gotta love the ride, it’s just as important as the destination itself, right? :)
I really love how these DIY 3D Vintage Tags turned out and how my revolutionary technique of printing on acrylic paint backgrounds gives you the opportunity to be surprised! When you make the backgrounds without knowing where each image will go after printing, you will see how each and every single detail that you painted just surprises you in the most beautiful kind of way! The details are everything when creating something truly unique!
cardstock paper | lasejet printer | acrylic paint | gold acrylic paint | gold scissors

I love your acrylic painting with the bee printable! Thanks so much for sharing your creativity with us! I’ve been looking for your swirl and flower stencil and I can’t find it on Amazon. Do you know who made it? It’s perfect for a project I’m working on.

Thanks, Joyce! I’m really happy you love my work!
I’ve had the stencil with the flowers and the swirls for ages, I think it’s made by a craft supplies company from Italy called Stamperia.
They are pretty popular in Europe, hope you’ll find their products where you live! :)
