Learn how you can easily make this DIY Gold Jars and Bottles Makeover project using gold spray acrylic paint and your favorite new or recycled jars and bottles!
Hello, creative friends! The weather is starting to get moodier and feel a little bit crispier, it’s like you can almost feel the new fall vibe in the air. I’m not a particular fan of this new season, what’s to love about endless rains and cloudy days, right? But I just LOVE the feeling of coziness it brings, I definitely cannot say NO to that! :) I also love how nature gradually turns her color pallette into warmer colors.
So today I thought it would be fun to show you how you can create this chic project – Easy DIY Gold Jars and Bottles Makeover by painting the lids of jars and bottles with gold acrylic paint! I’m choosing gold for this makeover because I love adding some golden touches here and there, no matter the season, but especially in the fall, when you can easily pair it with all these gorgeous and warmer colors of the season.
Easy DIY Gold Jars and Bottles Makeover
I started with jars and bottles in different sizes and shapes, you can easily adapt this project to what you have around!
I used a few jars and bottles from Ikea (the three cylindrical bottles from the right and the rounded one in the front ) and a few ones from The Home – an online home decor store from my country. I usually like to trace the origin of the products I love, so to be more specific, some of these jars and bottles sold by The Home are actually imported from Zeller, a German company. So, no matter where you live in the world, if you love these jars and bottles, look for the name Zeller, it might be popping up somewhere on your products, when you least expect it! ;)
What you need to take into consideration is to choose jars and bottles that have a lid with a solid closing system and can be painted on the outside. What do I mean by that? Before painting, start by carefully observing how your lids are closing. The idea is to have beautifully painted golden lids on the outside, but also keep their closing system functional on the inside. You want to apply paint everywhere outside your lid, but keep the closing system intact, so you can perfectly close your jars and bottles afterward. So check how your lids are closing and don’t apply any paint on that area, it’s that easy!
I decided to use metallic gold acrylic spray paint for this project, to make things easier, but you can definitely choose the regular acrylic paint and a brush route if you want! I actually did that on this other project, while creating these super chic -> DIY Herbs and Spices Apothecary Jars.
I had a few sticker residues on some of the lids, so I used isopropyl alcohol to quickly remove them. I used gloves while doing this and opened all the windows, I’ve heard some nasty things about isopropyl alcohol lately so I try to limit my usage of this product as much as possible. Wash your lids with dish soap and plenty of water, then let them air dry or use paper towels to speed up the drying process.
One of the bottles that I wanted to give a gold makeover was an oil pourer bottle, so I used some paper tape to cover the inside part of the spout first. The paper tape will protect that part from the spray paint and can be easily removed afterward.
I placed all the lids on a scrap piece of MDF, covered with a plastic sheet (use a large ziplock bag as a replacement) and took everything outside.
P.S. No matter what are you using underneath your lids while painting them, make sure you don’t skip the plastic sheet! Even if the lids are slightly sticking to this surface, it’s easier to remove them without damaging the paint (as opposed to paper or cardboard which can create unfortunate tearings). My idea was to spray a thin layer of paint all over their surface while rotating the MDF board, to get better coverage. It would be ideal to spray a few thin layers, rather than going for a thick single one, but because some of the lids were quite small, I had a few (minor) dripping issues here and there. Nothing serious though!
When the lids are starting to dry, I usually like to use a needle or a skewer to slightly move them to the right/left from their initial position. Just place the needle on the table, near each lid and carefully push them towards their right/left. You are basically pushing them using their margins and without touching their painted surface. This will prevent them from sticking to the plastic sheet, just make sure they are not touching .. and sticking to each other! :)
You can use any recycled jars and bottles or
apothecary jars | spice jars | Ikea jars | Ikea spice jars |apothecary bottles
small jars | small bottles | oil bottles | oil pourers
gold acrylic spray paint | isopropyl alcohol (optional)
I was really happy with how they all turned out! You know I’m not looking for perfection while creating my DIY projects. Or maybe I should rephrase this and confess that I am looking for perfection, but I don’t always get it! Haha! ;) Anyway, that’s the beauty of DIY projects, you get beautiful, but sometimes unpredictable results. Even small imperfections here and there! :) But it’s great if you can embrace all these and really enjoy the whole process, the final results can give you so much satisfaction!
The best thing about this Easy DIY Gold Jars and Bottles Makeover project is that you can instantly get gorgeous results!
You can use your new DIY Gold Jars and Bottles anywhere in your home as lovely decorative pieces or as a chic way of storing all kinds of small bits and pieces. They would look amazing Frenchified, with any of my French labels, don’t you think?
But you can also use them for storing dry spices or condiments in your kitchen! Not to mention they would make the perfect gifts for family and friends, just fill them with seasonal treats and they are soooo READY to go! Any pumpkin pie spice lovers out there? :)
Hope you’ll love this project and decide to give it a try! ♥
Don’t forget to smile,
Diana
