DIY Herbs and Spices Apothecary Jars – learn how to easily make these super chic vintage apothecary jars, they can be the starting point in embarking in your own herbal apothecary adventure!
Hello, friends! Now more than ever just feels like the perfect time to start a new and exciting project like making your own herbal apothecary! Learning or maybe rediscovering these long forgotten skills that have been around for thousands of years will open so many new doors and opportunities! It’s much more than the initial excitement that a new project can bring, learning the secrets of plants and discovering all their amazing healing properties can be life changing both for you and your family. It’s really awesome discovering all these bits and pieces that make so much sense when put together, especially when realizing that plants are willing to share all their secret with us!
This can be the perfect way to focus our energy into a more positive direction, instead of a negative one, all the current situation, with all the things that are going on right now can really take a toll on every single one of us! It can (and should be) a matter of choice for everyone, so why not try and do something positive, that would benefit you and your family instead of succumbing to negative thoughts and fear?
Herbal apothecary is really such a vast territory that is waiting to be explored! It can be your new hobby, if you wish, you might be surprised how much you actually like it! I know I was! And still am! :)
It’s really a shame not to take advantage of all the information available online in these present times, it’s just like Mr. Dreamy always says … all the information is just one click away! It’s so amazing when you actually think about it for a second, you can learn new skills in a matter of weeks or months (sometimes even days), instead of years!
I created these beautiful vintage herbs and spices labels for you – and for me, obviously :) I’m sharing them on the Graphics Fairy, along with the step by step tutorial (find the link at the end of this post). I’m really hoping these labels would be that ”special something” that would spark your interest in learning more about plants. I know everyone has its own journey and that is perfectly normal, so please don’t be intimidated and just start small. Dry some aromatic herbs first, make some pretty jars to store them, learn some of their remarkable properties and just find new and exciting ways of incorporating them into your life on a daily basis.
I have started drying different herbs during the last couple of years as I got more into the idea of returning to a simpler life, (re)learning the basics and making things from scratch! I don’t know if I had all these in me or I somehow tuned in with them in time, but I believe this blog, with all these DIY project also helped me! It opened my mind to all the things that I can make by myself, it’s really such an amazing and empowering feeling! OK, Mr. Dreamy was (really) the driving force behind, he was the one that always encouraged and fueled my moves with confidence!

I went for a subtle antiqued look for my labels, but you can use any of the colors you love. It can be something that would match your personal style or maybe something new that you’ve always wanted to try! You can experiment with these beauties and make them your own! Turn them into something that you really love!
DIY Herbs and Spices Apothecary Jars – my choice of herbs
The dried mint, the chamomile, the rosemary, the elderflower, the orange peels, the cherry stems, the beautiful lavender and the lovely rose petals were just a few of the things I had around. You can use the DIY Herbs and spices apothecary jars to hold your favorite plants … or just the ones that you have around! :) Lavender is definitely my first choice when it comes to the herbs I usually keep some close by, mainly because of its heavenly scent, but it has so many other amazing properties! And it’s surprisingly easy to grow too! You can get creative when trying to incorporate it into your life in its fresh, dried or its essential oil form. You can try using it with these DIY No Sew Lavender Sachets, this unique essential oils diffuser or this Epsom salt & lavender detox bath soak. You can even add it into your coffee, have you tried an Earl Grey tea latte before? It’s pretty awesome! :)
I actually got into the magical world of natural fermenting last year when I started making my own apple cider vinegar (will be sharing more on this topic soon) and these unbelievable scented rose petals from our garden are just perfect for making flavored rose petal vinegar! You can also add them to your tea or baked goods, but they can also be easily incorporated into natural beauty products too!
That’s the best part when it comes to actually using all these herbs, they are highly adaptable to one’s needs and can be used in so many different ways!
Use your imagination to decorate the labels as you want, but you can have so much fun while decorating the lids too!
I really loved how my DIY Herbs and Spices Apothecary Jars turned out and how charming and unique each piece is!
Taking small steps towards learning more about herbalism and all the amazing benefits of herbs can be quite intriguing! You’ll gradually find yourself in the position of wanting to include more and more herbs into your meals throughout the day so that you and your family can take advantage of what they have to offer. You can sprinkle them directly on your food or add them while you’re cooking, you can use them to flavor vinegars or make infused oils, herb infused honey and even flavored kombucha, homemade bitters or extracts, oxymels (a mix of vinegar with honey and herbs). You can use them while making your own natural beauty products, salves and many more.
It would be really amazing to have the chance of growing or foraging the herbs yourself, but if you can’t do that you can always buy them online! I’ve seen Mountain Rose Herbs (Amazon | website) popping over and over again in many of my online searches over time, everyone mentions them as a reputable source for dried herbs. They also have a great blog, you can learn so many useful things just by reading their articles or trying some of their recipes!
The labels that I created can be used for writing the name of the herbs and the date, but I also included an additional row … for the Latin names of the plants! It looks like real herbalist do that, so why not trying to learn a few other new and interesting things, right? :)
But as it turns out, it’s best to learn their usual names in the beginning … before actually finding their Latin names! I’m having a bit of dilemma with the actual names of my roses, I need to figure these things out first! :)
