DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags – 5 ways!

May 15, 2020 By Diana / Dreams Factory 6 Comments

Learn 5 ways of making these DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags, turning each black and white illustration into a small piece of art, each beautiful on its own and truly unique!

Hello, friends! Today we are adding a ‘pop’of color into our lives with these gorgeous DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags! I will be showing you 5 ways of turning some regular tags into mini pieces of art!

DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags

Even though the starting point will be the same – the lovely poppy illustrations – you will be able to really transform each tag into a unique creation, proudly wearing your own signature! Your own vision! :)

The 5 methods are:
1. The joyful colored pencils and pastels method
2. The chic nail polish method
3. The dreamy  watercolors method
4. The classy oil painting method
5. The delicate tissue paper and acrylics method

Let’s call these 5 ways of experimenting – methods or techniques, but they are really just 5 ways of having fun. Or 5 ways of decompressing. Or 5 ways of spending some time with your self, or with your family, because you can include them in the process. Or 5 ways of recharging your batteries while doing something that you love. Just pick one and you are ready to go! ;)DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags

If you are somehow surprised seeing all this red on my blog today, you are not the only one… I was (somehow) surprised too! :) Red is not really my color, but I had some beautiful poppies my mom picked up for me a few days ago and they somehow gave me the inspiration I needed. And the final results really proved me (once again) that sometimes it’s OK to step out of your comfort zone and experiment!

Of course, you can definitely try any other colors, I bet these DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags would also look beautiful in orange! Or in yellow. Or why not in blue! I’m also thinking combining several colors right now, someone stop me until I actually start making these in all the colors of the rainbow! :)DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags

The supply list might seem somehow random, but I literally just pulled out what I saw on my shelves in my atelier ;) Why? Because I wanted to try different techniques and see which one I loved best. I don’t usually plan my projects to the last detail, I mostly just go with the flow and let my creativity guide me. And that’s exactly what you should do too! Let my ideas be your guide, your starting point, if you want, but please, don’t be afraid to try new things! Be bold and brave, my friends, like these beautiful red poppies! :)

And speaking of bold and brave, a little bit off topic, I know, but I discovered Flora Bowley’s Intuitive Painting a while back and I really loved her method of painting. Of art making. It’s really amazing what she does, it really confirms what I strongly believe – that we should all follow our instinct, our intuition and our creativity when it comes to creating something. Anything really, because that can apply to so many things in life, don’t you think?

OK, going back to our project now! :) The chic printable that I created for this project is available for free download along with the full tutorial and the step by step images (I have quite a few) on The Graphics Fairy, as part of our collaboration. I’m sharing the link to the tutorial at the end of this post in a second.

DIY Vintage French Poppy TagsAnother thing that I want to talk about is the amazing poppy illustration from The Graphics Fairy, my focal point for creating the tags. The black and white illustration is from an 1880’s Agricultural Magazine – and if we are doing a little bit of math, that’s 140 years ago! How creepy but also fascinating is that!? :) This thing alone gave me so much joy (and many goosebumps) because we are basically giving a new life to something old, something that was, at some point, part of people’s life. Now I’m thinking what if some people will find the collage that I made for this project in 140 years from now?! We might be making history here! :)

And seeing this 1880 amazing illustration and how it managed to survive the test of time, I’m really hoping 2020 will not be remembered only as the Covid year! I’m sure there are so many other things that are defining the present and maybe it’s our job to make those stand out over time! We are really making history here!DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags

I hope you love this project as much as I did (by the way, Mr. Dreamy loved it too) and now that I’m thinking about it, red might be a color that could grow on me … eventually! :) Because I’m really envisioning these gorgeous DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags made at a larger scale, especially the 3D ones made with the tissue paper – that might have been my favorites! :)DIY Vintage French Poppy Tags

These are really awesome. I love how you think outside the box all the time and come up with such creative things, then you share!!! Thank you for that.

These are very pretty! Out of the five, my favorite is the 3D with tissue paper.

Hi! I found you through The Graphics Fairy and have thoroughly enjoyed your posts and projects. It has helped to have new craft ideas to explore while spending so much time at home.

With this coming weekend being Memorial Day, I am planning to make some of your poppy cards to hand out to veterans, putting a “Thank you for your service” on the back.

I appreciate the various ways to finish them, too!

      Thanks for stopping by, Jackie!
I’m really happy you enjoy my projects, you found such an amazing use for the poppy tags! I hope everyone loved them! :)
Fun fact – I had no idea poppies are connected with Memorial Day, because we don’t celebrate it in my country.
Can you believe how the universe finds ways to connect the dots even without us knowing it? The timing was just perfect! :)
